Helen sat up in bed with a stainless cup of sugarless cassava flakes in her hand. With a squeezed face, she slowly took it bit by bit, having a flashback of last night event.

She and her two friends, Susan and Maria, were approaching a birthday event uninvitedly, when two body guards stopped them and asked for their green cards. It was an event where only the big wigs were allowed in.

Helen pouted her lips and gave a long hiss, while her two friends lied that they were friends to the celebrant.

The bouncers laughed hysterically at them, and rained abusive words on them in pidgin language.

"Yeye men. See as them be. Make una go school, una no go. No be dogs dey guard," Helen responded bitterly. "Make we dey go o jare."

"Chai, papa Helen no well," she said, out of thought, putting the cup aside. "The man just dey too poor, pesin no know how him inherit the poverty. If him be big wig, shey dem no go allow me enter yesterday? Abi na Aishat Buhari go go that kind event wey dem go dey ask am for one green card? I be the first born for my family, a family of ten, mbok! How come Mama Helen let that palm wine tapper do am born ten, when he no get money? I---"

"Helennn ooo," said Maria, who had been eavesdropping from behind the door. She walked in and sat very close to her. "You no need all this, Helen. Wetin make I dey talk too? You sef know about my family. You know say your papa and my papa be friends. If not for the akara and boli wey our mama dey cook sell, how we go dey survive? Yet, my own papa go dey shout say na first him carry for school all through. It is evident na. Who no know our papa as ogogoro drinkers? See, we are not from a rich family, but we must make sure that a rich family comes from us."
