THE MEDIA'S INFLUENCE

The média's influence cannot be overemphasized nor underestimated. The media has the power to break or make anything yet due the power the media can wield it doesn't seem to be cautious when releasing sensitive messages.
Take for example, the current day sensitization on depression which might be doing more harm than good. Although it has made Africans especially Nigerians realize that depression is not only a white man's disorder and affects all races but at the same time this increased news coverage of depression has made some ignorant people who are probably in dysphoria believe that they are depressed, consequently also making them believe that the only way out of depression is suicide. The news goes as to give the gruesome details of how suicide was carried out hence the rampant use of Sniper insecticide for suicide. The same way suicide by jumping into the Lagos lagoon was made popular a few years ago.

Another sensitive issue that wasn't relayed cautiously by the media is the issue of terrorism, Drug trafficking and Gang membership. The media might try hard to show that they aren't prejudiced towards a particular race, people or profession but the fact still remains that their Prejudice seeps into their audience in many ways.
The media especially leading channels like CNN, BBC portray people bearing Muslim names who commit crimes as terrorists even though there might be no connection to any terrorist group yet if white people commit the same crime they are said to be mentally deranged.

To be continued
