The lion told all the animals that they need to start feeding on their young ones and the feeble ones among them so the suffering can be reduced.
From then on the Lions, Tigers and other big animals began to hunt the lesser animals. The animal kingdom was in chaos, it was survival of the fittest. The young ones were not spared, many animals ate their young ones and those that refused where killed.
Mama Kangaroo couldn't bear eating her baby so she hid him in her "pocket", thereby protecting her baby. She also left the animal kingdom at night so as to protect herself.
That is why the kangaroo still keeps her young ones in her pocket after birth for the fear of danger and the animal kingdom haven't recovered from the rule of King Lion.
