Beatrice Wills was a peculiar child to all that she came across. A fully grown soul trapped in the body of a child. By the age of 4, she could fluently express herself, use words that normally are bigger than she is and spoke like she had knowledge of past events concerned with her family.
"It's your first day of school as a big girl sweetie. Excited?" Brenda asked her daughter who sat opposite her at the dining table with a big smile on her face. They were having breakfast before the bus's arrival to get Beatrice for school.
"Yes mommy. It won't be that hard. Just like you realised when you were younger. Only, this isn't Nigeria so it won’t exactly be the same but I’ll manage." Beatrice smiled back.
Brenda raised an eyebrow at her daughter's sentences.
"Issokay." She enounced in a dilute pidgin accent when Beatrice just kept smiling.
Bea giggled.
"I’ve always liked your feeble tries at pidgin. Even back home. I honestly wonder how you survived Lagos before moving here." Beatrice stated, surprising her mother.
Brenda wasn't surprised just because of the words coming out of the 4 year old's mouth even though that was enough to surprise anyone but because of her knowledge of Brenda's growing up in Lagos, Nigeria before getting married and moving here to Massachusetts with her husband. Anthony, Brenda's husband, works for a company with arms in various parts of the world and he was transferred to the arm in Boston. Anthony was staying at his family house in Lagos one Christmas when he met Brenda who was still a university student then. Their chemistry was undeniable. He flew her to Boston with him to finish her education claiming he couldn't stand being away from her. He proposed to her the day she got her Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Massachusetts in front of everyone, including their families. As an esteemed worker in the company, Anthony put in a word for Brenda and she started work at the company. Two years after working together, they had their church wedding. They took leave from work and flew back to Nigeria to have their traditional wedding and then to Europe for their honeymoon. Brenda moved in with her newly wedded husband and after two months she conceived.
All of this is a part of their life their daughter most definitely should not be aware of, not because they didn't want her to know, but simply because she was too young. Yet, somehow, little Beatrice not only knew of these things, but appeared to have lived it too because Brenda couldn't remember ever speaking pidgin in Beatrice's presence. Born and bred in Boston, Beatrice shouldn't even know what pidgin is.
"What do you know pidgin and Lagos are?" Brenda asked hoping to hear that Beatrice just overheard her or Anthony talking.
