GARRI
Garri, how wonderful you have been;
Garri, a saviour you've been;
Garri, how useful you've been;
Garri, how perfect you are.
To the needy, you satisfy their empty bellies;
To the rich, you are their fast food;
To students, you are a messiah;
To everyone, ye are available for purchase.
Feeling exhausted, after working on hot days,
Your name rings in our head.
With imaginations of how we'd consume thee,
We scurry home.
Inside our bowls, we empty you;
With groundnuts we decorate you;
With sugar, we spice thee up;
Soaking thee with our cold water.
Oh! How tasteful you become,
As we ingurgitate or munch you!
Even the milk next to us,
Wishes you commit suicide in thee.
At the mention of your name,
Kulikuli appreciates thee;
Akara, moi-moi and beans compliment thee;
Fried fish betroths thee;
Suya welcomes thee with open arms.
Ye have saved lives,
Ye have given hopes,
Ye have been a present help in troubled times,
And ye continue to do forever.
Thank you for not being extinct;
Thank you for the smiles you bring to our faces.
Oh garri! We appreciate thee;
Oh garri! We love thee.
