Does social media represent individuals authentically?
According to Wikipedia, social media are interactive technologies that facilitate the creation and sharing of information, ideas, interests, and other forms of expression through virtual communities and networks. Popular social media include Facebook, WhatsApp, Telegram, Twitter, Instagram, etc.
I am of the opinion that social media do not represent individuals authentically. In most cases, they show only a tiny portion of an individual's personality at best.
Using myself as a good example, I do come off as a stone hearted person who doesn't care about people or their feelings. I also argue all the time and people generally see me as troublesome and ungentlemanly. In reality, I am considerate, polite and gentle. I hardly engage in arguements offline. Social media is just a tool to cool off in my perspective.
A second example I will like to use is the business class. Business men and women act classy, calm and civil on social media. They are quite polite in their engagements too. However, a good number of them are just as vulgar and annoying offline as the average person. Putting up a professional attitude online is not optional to them.
The final example I will give are skit makers. They're often very wild, naughty and have great senses of humour online. Offline, they can be anything from boring to introverted to being reserved.
In general, I think people live dual lives, offline and online.
SOCIAL MEDIA AND REALITY.
Social media, recently have become a medium for Communication and interaction among people of different kinds of different parts of the world.
Today many people would simply put on a lifestyle, different from what they are truly.
For instance, social media frauds have increased because people are every now and then impersonating others to claim a token either from firing people or even people within the country.
Therefore the identity of people on social media is not authentic.
Since falsehood is everywhere on the space.
Many hacked accounts claims a futune from people simply because they believe the person behind the keyboard, was someone they know.
