My roommate had this very fine girlfriend, like this babe was white like mami water, I often wondered how my roommate got her in the first place, it's not as if he was rich or something, he wasn't even fine, he was just an inch taller than her and he was beardless!
But then, I, I had the sleekest beard and I was almost 7ft tall. I thought girls liked tall boys, why then was Fiona with Jide and not me?
After my wave of thoughts, I'd remember Jide was an asthma patient, and Fiona was a sort of activist that liked helping people who had illnesses like asthma, ulcer, arthritis and then some.
Fiona came to our apartment regularly and they would spend hours talking, then the minute she leaves, Jide would wring his face in disgust and let out the mightiest of sighs. She was so clingy. Something similar to that happened today, and one hour after she left, she called, but Jide was performing his Mahgrib prayer so he couldn't pick up the phone, I stretched my hand over our mattress so I could reach the phone and take the call for him but I could hear him grunt and hum simultaneously, he also shook his head vigorously, this was because he was praying and according to Islamic laws he couldn't talk while praying. He was trying to tell me to let the phone be and not take her call but I just shrugged my shoulders and said,
"C'mon guy, what could possibly go wrong? "
So I answered. And immediately she heard my voice, I could hear the tone drop in hers, she asked what Jide was doing that he couldn't pick up his own phone, so I told her he was praying. The next thing, she went all ballistic, cursing at Jide and I, saying that Jide was cheating on her and I was covering up for him. I tried to explain but she ended the call.
When Jide was done with his prayer, he just sat still on the mat, it was obvious he had heard what Fiona was saying on the phone, she had been screaming, even our neighbors probably heard.
It wasn't even fifteen minutes after she called, that she rammed through our apartment door, screaming my name. Jide and I were so scared we didn't even know what to do. Immediately she set her eyes on me, she lifted me by the collar and accused me of covering up for Jide, shaking me and hitting my back against the wall. No matter how Jide tried to get her hands free from my neck, he couldn't. That was until she spun around, like a hurricane and faced Jide and shoved him back till he stumbled and fell. He started to hold his chest and gasp for air.
"He's having an asthma attack! " I screamed and proceeded to get his inhaler but Fiona held me by the neck and used my head to hit the wall. I could feel the blood spill from the back of my head and I could see her get Jide's inhaler from the top drawer, where he always kept it and throw it out the open door. I wanted to help Jide but I couldn't move, the sight of my own blood paralyzing me.
And so I watched as he continued to gasp for air, convulsing on the ground, with Fiona sitting leg crossed close to his head, crying. The last thing I saw however was how Jide grasped onto her shirt as he took his last breath and how Fiona kissed his forehead when he was finally dead, then angrily turned to me, her eyes bloodshot red.
