*Grandma Is Dead*

It was night already. I had had a long day so I decided to take a shower and i must say night showers aren't really my thing. I headed for the bathroom and began to brush my teeth, humming a song by J.Cole. "Open the door",my mother said,rapping on the bathroom door.
Instinctively I knew something was wrong. My mother sounded the way she used to if perhaps my brother left home unannounced and she couldn't reach him. Or if she had called my dad repeatedly without the latter answering. In other words,she sounded disturbed. I opened the door and she said "grandma ti ku", meaning grandma is dead. I went numb,momentarily forgetting which grandma she was referring to. She saw the look on my face and she said "your dad called. He said grandma died this evening" .
And then,she left,entering the toilet. Whenever my mum's mind wasn't at rest,she visited the toilet. And as she entered the toilet,i rinsed my mouth and came out of the bathroom,clad in my towel. I checked the date and saw that it was the 20th. I waited for the desolate feeling of grief to settle and I almost cried. She had been battling stroke for 3 years and in a way,i was glad she was free from the pain. I could hear my mum sniffing in the toilet and I could see my younger brother crying. I remembered the last time I saw her.
When I looked into her eyes,i saw no recognition. I didn't see the vibrant,energetic woman she used to be. She was dead. Paralysed. At that time,i had wished for death to put her out of her misery. But i was not prepared for the tight ache in my chest or the choked tears in my mouth.
"What happened?", my elder brother asked me,coming out of his room. "Grandma is dead",I said and I went to take my bath.
